Stainless Steel Turned Parts — Swiss CNC Turning SS 303 316

Jamnagar Brass Components manufactures precision stainless steel turned parts in SS 303, SS 304, SS 316, and SS 316L using Swiss-type (sliding-head) CNC turning and conventional CNC turning centres. Our stainless steel turning capability complements our brass, copper, and aluminium machining services, providing a comprehensive non-ferrous precision components service under one roof.

Stainless Steel Grades We Machine

SS 303 (1.4305) is the free-machining grade of austenitic stainless steel, with sulphur additions improving chip breaking and reducing tool wear for high-volume production. SS 304 (1.4301) is the most widely used grade for general corrosion-resistant applications. SS 316 (1.4401) provides improved chloride and chemical resistance for marine, pharmaceutical, and chemical industry components. SS 316L (1.4404) is the low-carbon version of 316, preferred for welded assemblies and medical device components. We also machine SS 430 (ferritic) and 17-4 PH (precipitation hardened) stainless for specialist applications.

CNC Turning Capabilities

Our Swiss-type CNC lathes handle components from 1 mm to 32 mm diameter in long, slender configurations — ideal for spindles, screws, shafts, and medical device components. Our conventional CNC turning centres handle larger diameters up to 200 mm with lengths up to 600 mm. All turning centres are equipped with live tooling for milling, drilling, and threading in a single setup, reducing cycle times and improving concentricity.

Components We Manufacture

Stainless steel turned parts we produce include medical device components and surgical instrument parts, food processing equipment shafts and spindles, marine hardware components, chemical processing valve stems and fittings, pharmaceutical equipment components, automotive sensor bodies and housings, electronic component standoffs and spacers, and custom precision components from customer drawings in any stainless grade.

Tolerances and Quality

We hold dimensional tolerances to ±0.005 mm on diameters and ±0.01 mm on linear features for precision stainless components. Surface roughness of Ra 0.8 µm is achievable on turned features, with finer finishes by grinding or lapping on request. Our quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015. Material certifications to EN 10088 and ASTM A276 are provided with each shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions — Stainless Steel Turned Parts

Q1: What grades of stainless steel are used for turned parts?

The most common grades are SS 303 (free-machining, sulphur addition for excellent machinability), SS 304 (most widely used austenitic grade, good corrosion resistance, standard engineering applications), SS 316/316L (molybdenum addition for pitting resistance, chemical and marine applications), and SS 430 (ferritic, magnetic, lower cost). For high-strength applications, SS 17-4 PH and SS 15-5 PH precipitation hardening grades are used.

Q2: What is Swiss CNC turning and why is it used for stainless steel parts?

Swiss CNC turning uses a sliding headstock with guide bushing support, enabling precision turning of long, slender stainless steel parts (high length-to-diameter ratios) that would deflect on conventional lathes. The work is supported continuously adjacent to the cutting zone, enabling tolerances of ±0.005 mm on diameters and excellent concentricity. Ideal for small diameter (0.5–32 mm) precision stainless parts like pins, shafts, and medical components.

Q3: What tolerances are achievable for stainless steel turned parts?

CNC turned stainless steel parts achieve ±0.025 mm on standard diameters and ±0.005 mm on precision Swiss-turned components. Thread tolerances to 6H/6g class (ISO 965) or Class 3A/3B (ASME B1.1) are standard. Surface finish Ra 0.4–1.6 µm is achieved from turning; Ra 0.1–0.4 µm with grinding or superfinishing. Cylindricity and runout tolerances of 0.005 mm TIR are achievable.

Q4: How does stainless steel machinability compare to brass?

Stainless steel (especially SS 304 and 316) has significantly lower machinability than brass — approximately 20–30% of free-machining brass on the machinability index. SS 303 (with sulphur) is the most machinable austenitic stainless at about 45% of brass. Stainless steel work-hardens during machining, requiring sharp tooling, high feeds, and coolant. This results in higher machining cost per piece compared to equivalent brass turned parts.

Q5: What industries use stainless steel precision turned parts?

Key industries include food and beverage (hygienically clean components, CIP-compatible), pharmaceutical and medical devices (surgical instruments, implant components, catheter fittings), chemical processing (corrosion-resistant fittings, valve stems), oil and gas (wellhead components, instrumentation fittings), marine (seawater system connectors), and electronics (precision pins, spacers, fasteners).

Q6: What surface treatments are available for stainless steel turned parts?

Stainless steel turned parts are most commonly supplied with passivation per ASTM A967 to enhance the chromium oxide passive layer. Electropolishing (Ra below 0.4 µm, improved corrosion resistance for medical and food applications) is widely specified. Other treatments include PVD coating for wear resistance, electroless nickel plating for non-magnetic requirements, and black oxide for aesthetic applications.

Q7: Can you manufacture stainless steel parts for medical device applications?

Yes. SS 316L (low carbon, 0.03% max) is the standard medical-grade stainless steel for surgical instruments, implant components, and medical device housings. We supply electropolished SS 316L parts to Ra below 0.4 µm per ASTM A380 passivation and ASME BPE (Bioprocessing Equipment) standards. FDA 21 CFR compliance documentation and materials biocompatibility certification (ISO 10993) are available on request.

Q8: Are stainless steel turned parts compatible with high-temperature applications?

SS 304 retains good mechanical properties up to 870°C (1600°F) for intermittent service; SS 316 to 900°C. For higher temperatures (above 900°C), SS 310 (25% Cr, 20% Ni) or high-temperature alloys (Inconel, Hastelloy) are required. Sensitisation of SS 304 (chromium carbide precipitation reducing corrosion resistance) occurs at 425–870°C — SS 304L or 316L low-carbon grades are used where this temperature range is encountered.

Q9: What is the minimum order and lead time for stainless steel turned parts?

Minimum order: 25 pieces for standard CNC turned SS parts; 10 pieces for complex multi-axis machined parts. Prototype quantities of 5–10 pieces available at prototype pricing. Production lead time: 2–4 weeks for standard SS turned parts; 3–5 weeks for complex multi-operation parts. Swiss CNC turned small parts (below 12 mm diameter): 2–3 weeks for production quantities.

Q10: Do you provide certificates for stainless steel turned parts?

Yes. Standard documentation includes Material Test Certificate (EN 10204 3.1 or 2.2) confirming stainless steel grade, chemical composition, and mechanical properties, Dimensional Inspection Report, Certificate of Conformance, and passivation certificate. For medical/pharmaceutical applications, additional documentation includes electropolishing certificate, trace element analysis, and biocompatibility statement per ISO 10993 if required.
