Stainless Steel Wire Forms & Springs

Stainless Steel Wire Forms & Springs

Jamnagar Brass Components manufactures a comprehensive range of stainless steel wire forms, compression springs, torsion springs, and extension springs in SS 304, SS 316, and SS 316L for automotive, medical device, marine, and general industrial applications. Our wire forming and spring coiling capabilities allow us to produce custom wire products from wire diameter 0.5 mm to 12 mm to your exact specifications.

Stainless Steel Spring Products

Compression springs resist compressive force in valves, switches, and mechanisms, available in cylindrical, barrel, conical, and double conical forms with closed, open, or ground ends. Torsion springs provide rotational force and are used in hinges, clips, and counterbalancing mechanisms. Extension springs resist tension and are used in retractable mechanisms and safety systems. All springs are stress-relieved after coiling to improve fatigue life and dimensional stability.

Wire Forms and Custom Clips

In addition to springs, we produce custom stainless steel wire forms including retention clips and snap rings, V-hooks and tension loops, safety pins and cotter pins, medical device components and implant wire forms, automotive sensor clips and locking clips, and marine hardware hooks, rings, and fastening elements. We work from 2D drawings, 3D CAD models, or physical samples.

Materials Available

SS 304 (1.4301) is our standard grade for most applications, offering good corrosion resistance and excellent spring properties. SS 316 (1.4401) is preferred for marine, chemical, and pharmaceutical environments where chloride resistance is critical. SS 316L (1.4404) is used for medical and food industry applications. We also work with Inconel 718 and 17-7 PH stainless for high-temperature applications upon request.

Tolerances and Quality

Wire diameter, free length, and coil diameter are controlled to tight tolerances with spring rate verified by load testing. Our quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015. Material certifications and dimensional inspection reports are provided with each shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions — Stainless Steel Wire Forms & Springs

Q1: What grades of stainless steel are used for wire forms and springs?

SS 304 (UNS S30400) is the most widely used grade for springs and wire forms due to its excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and availability in a wide range of wire diameters. SS 316 (UNS S31600) is specified for more aggressive environments (seawater, chemical processing) due to its molybdenum content improving pitting resistance. SS 302 and SS 17-7 PH are used for high-fatigue springs.

Q2: What types of stainless steel wire forms can you manufacture?

We manufacture compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs, constant force springs, flat springs, wave springs, circlips, retaining rings, wire clips, formed wire brackets, wire mesh inserts, spiral wound gasket rings, and custom-shaped wire forms to customer drawings. Both standard catalogue springs and fully custom wire forms are available.

Q3: What wire diameter range do you work with?

We manufacture stainless steel wire forms and springs from wire diameters of 0.1 mm to 12 mm. Precision cold-wound compression springs are produced from 0.3 mm to 8 mm wire. Larger wire diameters (8–25 mm) are available for heavy industrial springs using hot-coiling processes. Wire diameter tolerances are maintained to ±0.01 mm on precision springs.

Q4: What standards apply to stainless steel springs?

Stainless steel springs are manufactured to DIN 2093 (disc springs), DIN 2096 (compression springs), BS 1726 (cylindrical helical springs), and customer-specific performance specifications. Material conforms to ASTM A313 (SS 302/304/316 spring wire) or EN 10270-3 (stainless steel spring wire). Spring performance testing (load, rate, solid height) is conducted per applicable standards.

Q5: Can you supply stainless steel springs for food processing and pharmaceutical applications?

Yes. SS 316L wire springs and wire forms are supplied for food processing, pharmaceutical, and medical device applications where FDA 21 CFR compliance and resistance to cleaning chemicals (CIP/SIP) are required. Electropolished stainless steel wire forms offer improved corrosion resistance and reduced surface roughness (Ra below 0.4 µm) for hygienically sensitive applications.

Q6: What is the spring rate tolerance achievable on stainless steel compression springs?

Standard compression spring rate tolerance is ±10% per DIN 2096. Precision springs can be manufactured to ±5% spring rate tolerance with additional close-tolerance inspection. For very tight spring rate requirements (±2%), 100% load testing of each spring at specified heights is conducted, with non-conforming springs removed from the batch.

Q7: Are passivation and surface treatments available for stainless steel wire forms?

Yes. Passivation per ASTM A967 or AMS 2700 is performed on all stainless steel springs and wire forms to remove free iron contamination and enhance the natural chromium oxide passive layer. Electropolishing (reduces surface roughness, improves corrosion resistance), zinc plating, and PVC coating are also available. All surface treatments are documented with process certificates.

Q8: What industries use stainless steel wire forms and springs?

Key industries include automotive (valve springs, retaining clips, sensor springs), food and beverage processing (conveyor components, filter springs), medical devices (surgical instrument springs, catheter components), oil and gas (downhole tool springs, valve springs), electronics (battery contacts, switch springs), and general industrial machinery (safety valve springs, door latches).

Q9: Can you develop custom wire form prototypes?

Yes. Custom wire form prototypes are produced from 2D drawings, 3D STEP/IGES files, or physical samples. Prototype quantities of 10–50 pieces are available in 1–2 weeks. Our wire forming engineers can advise on spring design optimisation, material selection, and manufacturing feasibility. DFM review and design consultation are included with prototype orders.

Q10: What is the lead time and minimum order for stainless steel wire forms and springs?

Standard catalogue springs: 1–2 weeks, no minimum order. Custom CNC-formed wire forms: 2–4 weeks for first article, 3–5 weeks for production quantities. Minimum order: 100 pieces for standard wire forms; 500 pieces for precision springs. For very high volumes (above 100,000 pieces/year), dedicated tooling is set up for consistent production at lower unit cost.
